Creative Ways to Give Your Bathroom New Life

In a recent survey by the National Association of Home Builders, bathrooms surpassed kitchens as the most popular remodeling project. In the survey, 81 percent of remodelers reported that they completed bathroom remodels in 2017 followed by 78 percent who completed kitchen projects.

According to Remodeling Magazine’s 2018 Cost vs. Value Report, the average cost for a "midrange" bathroom remodel is just over $19,000.

However, it’s not necessary to do a complete overhaul to refresh a bathroom space. Making just a few changes can result in a space that feels brand new. Updates that can generate a big impact include replacing or re-facing cabinets, installing new flooring, upgrading countertops and fixtures, and re-tiling a shower surround.

Interesting wall treatments are another way to create visual interest. For example, colored and “crystal” grout products can transform basic tilework from ordinary to striking. Easy to apply decorative wall finishes that mimic plaster, and thin veneer natural stone panels can also be an effective strategy for adding some unexpected pizazz to the bathroom.

Colored grout. While white, gray and beige have been the traditional go-to colors for grout, colored grout in a broad spectrum of inviting hues is gaining in popularity. Litokol Starlike® grout offers its eco-friendly epoxy grout in more than 150 colors and finishes, providing virtually unlimited design options. Whether used for a new tile backsplash or shower surround, or to re-grout an existing tile area, this “fashion” grout can make a style statement without breaking the bank.

Colors range from classic and traditional hues for a subtle effect to glittering styles and metallic colors for a more modern aesthetic. Other options include Crystal Glass Grout Jewels®, which shimmer to create a jewelry-like effect, and translucent crystal glass grout, a grout made with tiny hollow glass beads that reflect and refract light to take on the color characteristics of the glass tile being used.

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, these grout products require no sealing, are stain and crack-resistant, don’t attract mold and mildew, and are safe for kids, pets and the environment. They are also waterproof, which is an important consideration for bathroom installations.

Decorative wall finishes. Another method for elevating the look of a bathroom is to add a decorative finish (epoxy mortar) that can quickly and easily be applied to walls. A variety of interesting application methods can be used to create unique color and decoration effects, and multiple colors can be overlaid atop one other to achieve striking dimensional looks. The versatile finish can be applied to a number of materials, including raw concrete plasters, plasterboards, lightweight paneling, wood, existing ceramic tiles and mosaics.

Thin stone veneer. Crafted by Mother Nature, natural stone surfaces are not only beautiful, but are also unique, making them an appealing option for homeowners looking for a dramatic, one-of-a-kind look. Lightweight and easy to handle and install, thin stone veneer is ideally-suited for walls and other vertical surfaces. Panels are available in slate, sandstone or quartzite, and – when installed on a bathroom wall or in a shower surround –can create an organic, textural aesthetic that will make any bathroom space shine.
